Found some new research books

Last weekend my husband and I went antiquing in downtown Fredericksburg, Va.  Sometimes the antique stores carry old books that can be valuable for researchers.  This weekend I found Marriage Records of the City of Fredericksburg, and of Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford Counties, Virginia 1722-1850. Compiled and Edited by Therese A. Fisher, for only $8.00, Marriages of Louisa County, Virginia 1766-1815 compiled by Kathleen Booth Williams for only10.00.  This was two great finds.  Now maybe nobody in my family happened to live or marry in those counties, but if I am helping someone else, I might be able to use these.

I also found the book Martin's Hundred by Ivor Noel Hume.  This book is about an early settlement by the Virginia Company which in later years became part of Carter's Grove.  I hope to find references about early settlers in my attempt to connect family members to Jamestown.

I find that reading  histories about the areas where your families may have lived helps a genealogist understand why they left or why they may have died.    It can explain relationships between families and how they traveled together.  Where they worshiped could play a large factor in migration or relatonships.
So here's to reading and how it can be the center of your research.

The only person I know on the front row is Clarence Bailey.  He looks a lot like a young Ricky Nelson.  Behind Uncle Clarence is Jennie Crawley Goard. Beside her is Ethel Crawley Price, Mae Crawley Bailey and Eros Gray Bailey.   I can only identify my daddy in the middle of the back row.

Crawley Post

Last Sunday I attended Gretna Christian Church for the Easter Service.  While I was there I asked Pete Crawley, if he had any pictures or information about the Crawley Family.  He directed me to his daughter Melody Crawley Margrave.  She kindly allowed me access to her pictures on Facebook.  Without her wonderful contribution, I would not be able to show you the pictures I will be posting in the next few weeks.

I have been searching for a while trying to find out where Major Brumfield died and how to connect Major Brumfield and his son William.

The genealogy is supposedly this.

James Brumfield married to Peshee Sutton

Major Brumfield married to Ann.  Some say Cobb or Cobbs, but I have not found proof of her last name.

I have no documentation for the first two Brumfield's connection.  I have a  copy of a deed connecting Major as James's son which was recorded in Amelia County.  I have no documentation proving that William is Major's son.  I have no documentation proving that Isaac is William's son.  Everything is proved after Isaac.  I have all the proof of Vincent, John and Velma.  This looks pretty pitiful, but there has to be proof out there somewhere.  It just will take longer than I thought.   All this information has been documented in several family stories, but I will need the right documents not just heresay.  I think that I will back track and start with Isaac.  I know that he is buried in Pittsylvania County.  I believe that there may be a chance that both William and Major moved to Kentucky or Tennessee.  Several members of their family had moved there earlier and Major may have sold all his property in Pittsylvania County before moving away.

This indenture made this twenty seventh day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty nine between Henry Yarborough of the County of Buckingham of the one part and Major Brumfield of the County of Amelia of the other part. This indenture made the 25^th day of September , 1755 between James Brumfield of Amelia County of the one part and Major Brumfield of the above said County of the other part Witnesseth that the said James Brumfield for and in consideration of the fatherly love and affection that the said James Brumfield bears to his well beloved son and for some other good causes and considerations heir thereunto moving given granted assigned released and confirmed and by these presents himself his heirs and or assignee doth give grant and assign release and confirm unto the said Major Brumfield his heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of land containing two hundred acres situate lying and being in the County aforesaid it being part of a tract of four hundred acres of land granted by patent to James Henderick and is the upper most end of the said tract lying and being on the branches of Flat Creek and was confirmed by the said James to the said James Brumfield and the reversion remainder and remainders thereof and all the Estate Right Title Interest Claim and Dowry whatsoever of him the said James Brumfield of in or to the same or any part thereof To have and to hold the tract or parcel of land of premises together with their and every of their appurtenances unto the said Major Brumfield his heirs and assigns forever to the only use and behalf of him the said Major Brumfield his heirs and assigns forever and the said James Brumfield for himself and his heirs doth promise and agree to and with the said Major Brumfield that he the said James the above granted land to him the said Major will warrant and forever defend from the claim of any person or person whatsoever.  In Witness whereof he the said James Brumfield hereunto set his hand and seal the day and year first above written.

This Deed proves that Major Brumfield was the son of James Brumfield.  He had to be least 21 years of age to receive property.

Thomas Henry Brumfield

This is a picture of Thomas Henry Brumfield.  My Aunt Judy sent this to me.  It was given to her by Virginia Brumfield and by the article (I don't know what publication.)  it was contributed by Dean Ab-Hough of North Carolina.

He is buried in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, but I don't know where.  Apparently his wife is buried in the same place.  He is the brother of Vincent Brumfield.  They are the sons of Isaac Brumfield.  He married Eliza Ann Midkiff.  I checked the census of 1850 and he was at home with his mother Letty and his sisters and brothers which included Vincent and Henry.  I can't find him in the 1860 census.  He would have been 24.  Could he have moved with his family to Ohio.  I will check and see.  He is the younger brother of Vincent.
I found a Thomas H. Brumfield and Byrd Brumfield that enlisted in the US Army during the civil war.  They were living in Russian River, Northern District of California.  I don't think this is him.  I found a 1860 Federal Census for a George Brumfield living with his wife Ann in California.  They had two older boys that were Thomas and Byrd Brumfield.  I think these are the two that enlisted in US Army.  They may have been cousins.  George Brumfield was from Virginia and his wife Ann was from Ohio.  You can't beat that coincidence

Grave Matters Montpelier Home of President James Madison and his wife Dolley.

It's been a long time since my last post and I hope that I can once again regularly blog to you about family matters and history.
I have recently returned to Virginia and I am certainly glad to be back.  Tennessee was nice, but Virginia is home.
Last Sunday my husband and I visited the home of President James Madison.  We visited over ten years ago and they had just started the renovations.  There was just a couple of rooms that they were in the process of renovating and some duplicates of Dolley Madison's dress.  Imagine my surprise with the newly renovated rooms, visitor center and Dupont Gallery.  It is becoming quite a place to visit and I hardily encourage anyone that has not been to go and if you have been, go again.  According to other visitors, every visit brings something new.  Everyone knows that President Madison was one of the main architects of our glorious Constitution.

I was thrilled to walk through the room that once housed his library, the dining room where so many personages visited, discussed and decided the nation's policies, and his bedroom- the place where a man for the ages drew his last breathe.

The Cemetery where James Madison is  buried is located where his father's first home once stood.   It is just a short walk from Montpelier.  Below are some pictures of the graves.

My wife Mary W Lee born September 8, 1805 married March 2, 1826 died March 29, 1836  Also her two sons Ambrose Madison  born February ?, 1822 died March 26, 1826 and John Willis  born March 21, 1836.  I could not read the death date.  I'm a little curious as to what happened here.

Back to Virginia

For eleven years my husband and I have been traveling like nomads through Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina and finally Tennessee.  We have been living in Nashville for the last three years, but now we are going back to Virginia.  In the next week, I will be posting memorable pictures for Nashville and the surrounding areas.  I hope you enjoy.

My husband and I took the tour of the grounds and house last year.  We found the tour of the house to be very interesting and some say that the character of Scarlet O'Hara was based on the lady that owned this house during the Civil War.  If you are ever in Nashville and have plenty of time to visit this house stop off for a trip.  It is right in Nashville so there is no travel time to a adjacent town or a country estate.

Crawley Family

My grandmother was Kizzie Mae Crawley.  She was the daughter of William Crawley and Margret Bennett Crawley.  In the 1900 Federal Census they were living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Pigg River District.  The enumerator was William T. Jefferson and the date the census was taken was June 19, 1900.
This enumerator was probably Eros Gray Bailey's grandfather.  Eros Gray Bailey would go on to marry William and Margaret Bennett Crawley's  daughter Kizzie Mae.

In the 1900 census the following information is available

William Crawley Head of the household, white, male, born March 1856, 44 years old, married for 18 years.  He was born in Virginia and so was his parents.  He was a farmer that could not read or write.
William Crawley was married to Margaret E.  She was white, born May 1864, 36 years old.  She had nine children, eight of which were still living.  She was also born in Virginia as were her parents.  It looks like they were married in 1882.  William would have been 26 and Margaret would have been eighteen.

They had the following children living with them in 1900.  The following pictures were generously donated by Melody Margrave.

Noel E son born August, 1882.  He was seventeen and single. According to the 1910 census, he was still living at home.   He was married to Ora Mae Yeatts.  Could be Ola.  He is buried at Gretna Burial Park in Gretna, Va.  He died on November 30, 1951

Nannie daughter born October 31, 1885. In the 1900 census. She was fourteen and single.  She later married Theophilus J. Payne known as Thee.  Here she is with her husband, mother and children.

This is a picture of her at a younger age.

 Nannie Crawley Payne died on August 3, 1948.  Her husband Thee died on November 30, 1961.

Samuel Crawley was born  January, 1889.  He was eleven years old in 1900.  He later married to Irene S.  At this time I have not verified his date of death, but some family tree information has him as dying on December 25, 1942.

Sallie K  daughter born February, 1891.  She was nine at the time of the 1900 census.  She married George Russell Bishop.  He was the son of Sam and Ella Bennett Bishop.  I found an obituary for him in the Danville Bee dated November 14, 1962.  He was still in Gretna, Virginia and his wife Sally was still alive.  He had died the day before.  I cannot find where Russell and Sally Bishop are Buried.

Kizzie M. daughter born January, 1892.  She was eight in the 1900 census.  She married Eros Gray Bailey on September 17, 1927 in Henry County, Virginia. They had two sons Clarence and Harold.  Kizzie died on July 14, 1966.  I remember it well.  She died at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia.  She had been having heart attacks and back then they gave you a nitroglycerin tablet.  She would take one of those, but she kept having them so the doctor sent her to the hospital.  She died that night.  We said goodbye to her and she to us before Daddy took her.  That was the last time I saw her.  They woke us up that night to let us know.  Granddaddy died at Roman Eagle Nursing Home in Danville, Virginia on March 6, 1974.

Jennie L. daughter born February, 1895.  She was five in 1900.    She married James L. Goard and they lived in Newport News, Virginia.  She died on April 5, 1971.

This is a picture of Laura M Crawley ,daughter.  Her sister Jennie is the one sitting.  She was born  February, 1896.  She was four at the time of the 1900 census.  I thought that she had married a George, but I can't find anything to confirm this.  Will look further.

James W. Crawly son born June, 1898.  He was one in 1900 census. This picture is James W and his wife Amy.  They lived in Gretna.

George Crawley and Ethel Crawley were born after the 1900 census.

George Crawley was seven in the 1910 census which puts his birthdate on or near 1903.   I believe he died in July of 1964.  I have found no obituary or grave stone to prove the fact.  He was married to Myrtle West.  She was the daughter of Daniel David and Virgie West.  The picture below is of George, Myrtle and their son Herman.

Ethel Crawley was three at the time of the 1910 census.  She died on November 18, 1977.  She married Willie Price and they had a daughter Janice.

James Brumfield

All I have been able to prove so far is that a James Brumfield came to Virginia in March 1672, transported here by Robert Taliaferro.
Yesterday I went to the Tennessee State Archives to look for the Vestry Book of Abingdon Parrish.  I was extremely disappointed that they did not have a copy.  I had read in several family genealogies that referred to a vestry record of Abingdon Parrish Church in Gloucester County where James Brumfield lived and in which James II and several other siblings births were recorded.
So I am going to have to search for these records.
The internet.
The internet archives has a book "Colonial Churches in the Original Colony of Virginia" in which he describes the early colonial Gloucester and Abingdon Parish. According to this book on page 190, the Abingdon Parish had 570 residents from 1677 to 1761.  On page 190 and 191, they alphabetical list resident's surnames and among those residents is a Bromfield.

James Brumfield

It has been quite a long while since I last wrote, but it is my intention to write three posts a week for the next few months and hopefully more.  I began searching my Brumfield relatives this spring.  In my past posts I was working my way backwards, but now I would like to begin with my first direct Brumfield relative James Brumfield that settled in the New World.  Now this does not mean that there were no Brumfields before he came.  This only is the only that I believe to be a direct descendant.  There was a young James Brumfield that came to Jamestown in 1607, but there is no positive proof as to what happened to him.

1.  James Brumfield married to Peshee Sutton.  Immigrants from England to Virginia on March 17, 1672.  They were transported here by Robert Taliaferro to Old Rappahannock County.  
Lived in Gloucester County.
Possible Children:
Robert, Martha, Isabel, James, Ann, William

Can I prove these facts, I don't know.  

First I went to the Library of Virginia in their Digital Memory Collection.  I found the land patent given to Robert Taliaferro March 17, 1672 conveying acreage to him for transporting colonist to the new world.  Lo and behold, they named  the colonist and in it was the name Peshee Sutton and below her name was James Brumfield.  Another Brumfield is also listed.  I could not distinquish the first name, though.
You can find this patent in the Digital Memory Collection Virginia Land Patents.

So here we have proof that James Brumfield and Peshee Sutton knew each other and they were here in 1672.
The Land was located in Rappahannock County.  There is a possibility that James and Peshee lived in Old Rappahannock when they first arrived.  That county is now extinct and the records are held at Essex County, Virginia.  Old Rappahanock was formed from Lancaster County in 1656 and became extinct in 1692

I looked on this page for information about the Brumfield family and did not find their name listed.

While searching for family ancestry I also looked for the history of the era.  I have attached a link for 1672 below.

More Mystery Pictures

These are more of the pictures that may be a part of the Ramsey or Clack Stone family.  As before, if anyone knows the identity of these people, please write.

 There is a date on this picture of 1894.  It isn't a tintype.  The back of the picture says send your cabinet and get 12 miniatures for 25 cent posted note.  They said no tintypes copied.  F. J. Walsh, No. 353 Perry Street, Trenton, NJ.

There was no zip code, of course.  Zip codes did not come into existence until 1963.    It looks like this young fellow was dressed in a sailor suit or it could be a girl, but my first impression was of a boy.

 This picture was on a tintype.  I don't know what kind of outfit the little boy is wearing.  Looking at it a little more closely I believe this may be a little girl with her hair pulled back.

 This picture was taken by C.A. Pugh Photographer of Chatham, VA.    This is a handsome young fellow with a spiffy outfit.  It would be a shame for him to remain anonymous.

George W Dove

This is a picture of George W. Dove.  He was married to Cornelia V. Ward Walden.  Cornelia was married to Littleton Tazewell Walden until his death due to a riding accident before the War Between the States.  George W. Dove met his untimely death in 1895 so this picture would have to have been taken before then.  Their daughter was Rose/Rosa Lee Dove who was married to Albert Lee Dalton.
